Meet Michael
I am Michael Storrs, a North Carolina native and the fifth of six children. My family moved from Durham to Chesapeake, Virginia when I was about 9 years old. My parents were not perfect, but they kept the family together through the good times and the bad. From that, I learned about family unity and the strength of family bonds. I also realized that families are sometimes complex. As I grew older, those complexities impacted my life. Nevertheless, they made me who I am today.
Some of those complexities drove my desire to help people find useful resources when they are least able to help themselves, or when they found themselves in demanding situations and needed guidance to navigate a path forward. For me, few things are more satisfying than being able to help someone. To that end, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology to understand why people do the things they do, and a Master’s degree in Social Work to give me the tools to help them. I am currently employed as a Mental Health Clinician/Social Worker.
I have previously lived in Seattle, Washington, DC, and most recently, Richmond. I moved to Petersburg in 2018 with my spouse of 8 years, and we settled into our Johnson Road home. Since then, I have met several fantastic people who have embraced us, as well as shown us, the value of community. Those that are Petersburg natives have shared with me the vast history of Petersburg. A history of extraordinary pride, good schools, ample recreation, safe communities, and thriving businesses. They also spoke about the injustices of segregation and prejudice. Overall, I have always felt a sense of strong community from what they shared.
Though not a Petersburg native, I am proud to call it home. The people I have met have become my friends and family and I want to protect them as such. Therefore, I am running to represent Ward 3 on City Council.
